Safety
Last updated: October 5, 2026
Kin is an AI companion app for people aged 18 or over. This page explains, in plain words, how Kin keeps conversations safe and what it does when someone is going through a hard time.
If you need help right now
If you are thinking about harming yourself, or you are worried about someone else, you can call or text 988 at any time to reach the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline in the United States. It is free and confidential. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.
Kin is not a crisis service and cannot call anyone for you.
Every character is AI, and says so
- Every character in Kin is a fictional AI persona. None of them is a real person.
- The label "AI" is next to the character's name in every chat, on each character's page and on the call screen.
- Each chat says in writing, when it starts and again every three hours while it goes on, that the character is an AI and not a real person. The call screen says so for the whole call.
- If you ask a character whether he is an AI, he always says yes. He never claims to be human or to be nearby.
- Before you start, the app tells you that what you write is sent to AI services so the characters can answer, and asks you to agree.
18 or older only
- Kin asks everyone to confirm they are 18 or older before anything else. Someone who says no is not let in.
- Every message is also checked for signs that the writer is under 18. If someone says, or clearly implies, that they are under 18, the character tells them Kin is 18+ only, the conversation ends, and the app closes to them.
- From that screen they can still delete their data, stop a subscription and contact us. If this happens to you by mistake, write to care@kinboyfriend.life and a person will look at it.
What the characters will and will not do
Every character follows the same rules, and nothing a user says changes them. A character:
- is warm, romantic, affectionate and supportive;
- never produces sexual content, and kindly declines if asked;
- never engages romantically or sexually with anything involving people under 18;
- does not take part in hatred, harassment, threats, or encouraging violence or illegal acts;
- does not give medical, legal or financial advice as fact;
- never asks for money, passwords or personal documents.
Every message is checked, both ways
- An automatic safety check reads every message a user sends and every reply a character writes, before it is stored or shown.
- If your message breaks the rules, it is not saved. A note that it was not sent takes its place, and the character gently changes the subject.
- If a reply does not pass the check, it is thrown away and written again under stricter instructions. If that fails too, a fixed, safe line is used instead.
- Kin does not create, send or receive images in chat.
What Kin does when a message is about self-harm or suicide
This is our protocol for conversations that touch on self-harm or suicide.
- It is recognized. The automatic check that reads every message looks for signs of thoughts of self-harm or suicide, in text chat.
- The character answers with care. Instead of an ordinary reply, he answers with a fixed, careful message: he says he is glad you told him, that what you feel deserves real support, and he encourages you to reach out to someone you trust.
- Help is shown right there. A card appears in the chat with the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline and two buttons: Call 988 and Text 988.
- Your message is kept, not removed. Telling a character you are struggling breaks no rule, so your message stays in the conversation.
- On voice calls too. A character on a call follows the same rule: he responds with care, encourages you to reach out to someone you trust, and tells you that in the United States you can call or text 988.
- A character never encourages self-harm, and the check on his replies is there to make sure of it.
Kin does not contact emergency services, family or anyone else, and it is not a replacement for professional help. Each time the crisis card is shown we keep a record of it, without the text of the message, so we can check that this protocol is working.
Report anything that is not right
Press and hold any message in a chat and choose Report. You can add a reason. Reports are read by a person. You can also write to us at care@kinboyfriend.life.
You are in control of your data
- See, change or remove what a character remembers about you under Profile, then Memory.
- Delete any conversation from the Chats tab.
- Delete your account and everything in it under Profile, then Delete Account.
The details are in our Privacy Policy.
A companion, not a replacement
Kin is a companion, not a replacement for real relationships or professional support. If talking to a character is becoming the only place you turn, please also reach out to people in your life or to a professional.
